"Harmony in Red"

Henri Matisse (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 180 x 220 cm - 1908 - (Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia)) (i) - Fauvism (i)

“Harmony in Red” is often held by critics and scholars to be Matisse’s magnum opus. A patron of post-impressionist art, Matisse borrowed a bunch of styles and techniques by artists like Van Gogh and Claude Monet. With the flat shades of Van Gogh and the fauvism of Monet, Matisse paints this work sans a point of focus. This painting was supposed to be dominated by the colour blue, but Matisse scraped that since he wasn’t happy with it. He intended this painting to be hung in the living of Sergey Shchukin’s Moscow residence. Hence, he wanted this to be a decorative piece. There was a monastery garden overlooking the window of his Paris studio, which greatly inspired this piece. “Harmony in Red” also employed a few familiar motifs in Matisse’s vocabulary, like the vase, the flowers and the fruits. It's available for public viewing as a part of the permanent collection in the Hermitage Museum.
