Size, Media and Style

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I is an oil painting on canvas with gold leaf, measuring 138 x 138 cm. This masterpiece was created by Gustav Klimt during his Golden Period, which lasted from 1903 to 1907. The style of this painting can be classified as Art Nouveau, a popular international philosophy and art movement that emerged in the late 19th century.

Date and History

The portrait was commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, Adele's husband, between 1903 and 1907. After its completion, it was exhibited at the Kunstschau in Vienna before being displayed in the Bloch-Bauer residence. During World War II, the painting was confiscated by the Nazis and later returned to Ferdinand after the war. However, following his death, the portrait became part of a legal battle between his heirs and the Austrian government. In 2006, it was finally restituted to Maria Altmann, one of Adele's nieces.

The Lady in Gold

Also known as "The Lady in Gold" or "The Woman in Gold," this painting is considered one of Klimt's most famous works. It features a striking image of Adele Bloch-Bauer, adorned with intricate patterns and gold leaf. The influence of Egyptian art on Klimt is evident in the portrait, as well as his fascination with the female form.
