"Mocking of Christ"

Annibale Carracci (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 60 x 69 cm - 1596 - (Pinacoteca Nazionale (Bologna, Italy)) (i)
Christ Crowned with Thorns or Christ Mocked is a 1598-1600 oil on canvas painting by Annibale Carracci, now at the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna. The painting as the name suggests, is a depiction of Christ; the image reveals the tortured body of Christ. Before being sentenced by Pilate, he was mocked by soldiers who, dressed him as a caricature of a king, with a crown of thorns. Carracci is the forgotten artist of the 17th century. Yet, his art was extremely influential in the progression of Baroque art. His style was known for its unparalleled naturalism and objective study from life. He managed to fuse radical realism with the romanticised perfection of classical and Renaissance art, thus pioneering a style of "idealized realism".
