"Prodigal Son 1"

Thomas Hart Benton (i) - Regionalism (i)
Thomas Hart Benton was an American painter and muralist who was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement. He toured America to depict the rural scenes, most of his work are associated with the midwest, where he lived for most of his life. In the painting Prodigal Son, he does a retelling of the old Biblical parable. The original story is about a young boy who left with his inheritance and went to live a pleasurable life, away from his father and family. But after the wealth was spent, he returned home to beg for work, but his father welcomed him with open arms and threw a feast for him. The story shows the limitless possibilities of kindness but the artist’s rendition offers a dreadful ending, where the son returns, and he finds a broken and battered home, the scene is bleak and the environment is ominous, the cow is only a skeleton left and the land is arid. This was in resonance with the artist’s experience when he returned home during the Depression, facing a calamity that he had no control over.
