"Double Portrait"

Lucian Freud (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 88 x 78 cm - 1986 - Expressionism (i)
Lucian Freud is known as the 20th Century’s foremost portraitist. this British artist painted in an expressive neo style It was quite common for his portraits to include an animal or pet, as in Double Portrait. The image is of his daughter asleep, with one arm covering the eyes and the other sprawled towards the viewer, her dog lays its head on the extended arm. He paints both subjects with the same interest, their bodies melt together, their limbs intertwine and echo. He painted it with impasto technique, laying the paint thickly on the canvas, he would often clean his brush after every application, so that the colour may remain consistently variable. He would also require the sitter to give many hours, these sessions were comparable to his grandfather, Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis. Lucien Freud aims to translate his direct perception on to the canvas, resulting in tender, honest and complex canvases.
