"Blue Lovers"

Marc Chagall (i) - Oil (i) - 49 x 44 cm - 1914 - Cubism (i)
Marc Chagall used the colour blue in numerous canvases, many of them of lovers in an embrace. He uses the colour to depict a space that seems to have no mass or time, all laws of physics disappear and the couple dissolve into each other, into the blue. Chagall was also known to be sentimental, claiming that the only colour that exists is the colour of love. He had fallen in love with Bella Rosenfield and was completely smitten and so was she. Their relationship had a tumultuous start as her family did not approve but the two stayed together till her death in 1994 which affected Chagall deeply. In Blue Lovers, the kissing couple seem to be from dreams, every detail seen from a different angle. The colour blue is also a mystical one, which is related to Expressionism but Chagall distanced himself from the prevalent labels, choosing to free his art, although we see the influence of cubism and especially surrealism, his work has dreamy elements or multiple conflicting elements. Chagall remarried after Bella’s death but she remained in his work, an essence of her can be seen in his blues, his colour of love.
