Domenico Di Michelino was an Italian Renaissance painter whose famous work Dante and the Three Kingdoms, depict a poet from his town, Florence. Dante Alighieri, a philosopher from the Middle Ages, wrote Comedia or Divine Comedy (1320), a piece of work that would continue to inspire till the 21st Century. Divine Comedy is a long narrative poem that describes Dante’s travels through hell, purgatory and heaven. Domenico Di Michelino illustrates Dante’s writing with many accurately depicted details. In the image, Dante stands with Inferno or Hell on his left, behind him is Purgatory and the city of Florence on his right, representing the Heavenly City. On the left, we see the sinners descending to hell, haunted by demons, the Devil can be seen below as he burns. Purgatory has seven levels of sinners as they carry out their punishments, the number seven referring to the seven deadly sins and on the top of the hill is paradise, represented by Adam and Eve. In the Heavenly City, you can see the church of Florence which is where this painting is displayed.
