Vincent Van Gogh returned to this subject often throughout his career, this resonated with his socialist ideals and saw that this represented the eternal cycle of agricultural life, of honourable endeavour and tradition. The young sower throws his hand in a broad gesture. The sun is bright in the sky, it is bright yellow and forms a halo on his head. The yellow-green colours of the sky contrast heavily with the violet land; the young boy is also blanketed in a shadow, with blue lines indicating his form and shape. Van Gogh painted many similar images, this particular canvas was made in the autumn of 1888, at a time when he was working with Paul Ganguin who advised him to draw more from imagination, and so Van Gogh used these colours to express emotion and passion and so the halo sun turns the sower into a saint.
