Currently kept in Rome’s Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica, “Narcissus” is a key painting in the career of the great Italian painter Caravaggio, who was regarded as a master of the Baroque Style. Caravaggio made only two paintings based on Classical Mythology, and this was one of them. As stated in Metamorphoses by Ovid, Narcissus is a charming young man who falls for a reflection of his own in the water. This story had traction in those circles formed by collectors. Two of these patrons include Vincenzo Giustiniani.and Cardinal del Monte. A academician working in the field of theories related to the Renaissance, Leon Battista Alberti, likened this fascination that artists had with Narcissus to the art of painting itself, calling it an act of embracing reflections. A mood of melancholy and despair is profoundly conveyed by the dark pitch black surrounding of our central figure. Since Caravaggio was a late-Renaissance painter who was properly present as the Italian Renaissance period transitioned into the Baroque period, he was able to combine techniques owing to both of these eras. While Caravaggio employed realism as typical to the Renaissance period, he used two techniques, namely Mannerism and Tenebrism that resounded with the era that was to come. While the former helped him bring out the well-pronounced emotion as well as drama, the latter brought out lights and shadows.
