Francis Bacon (i) - Oil (i) - Expressionism (i)
Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud were both considered Britain's most important post-war figurative artists. They were committed to the human figure, both attempting to capture the essence of being, through figures. Although Bacon was much older than Freud, they had become inseparable during the 1950s and 1960s, meeting almost every day. They both painted each other, but had completely different approaches. Freud liked to take his time, painting a canvas over the course of months, But Bacon was fast, he captured an essence, or mood without adhering to realistic approaches. The painting of Lucian Freud has no resemblance to him, but showed only a raw and unsettling imagery. Bacon had an existentialist and bleak outlook, which was amplified after his lover’s suicide. This explains Bacon’s style, painting Freud against a violent black wall, sharing the canvas with only shadows. Bacon had rejected all classifications of his work, claiming that he only strove to show “the brutality of fact”. He went on to paint other portraits of Freud until their friendship eventually ended.
