"Number 25"

Jackson Pollock (i) - 25 x 96 cm - 1950 - Abstract Expressionism (i)
John Pollock is famous for his artistic style called artistic expressionism. Widely known for his use of pouring or splashing liquid paint onto his canvas, Pollock’s paintings provide the painter and his audience with the opportunity to view the paintings from different angles. In the years 1951 and 1952, Pollock started experimenting and exclusively used black enamel for his paintings. The name Pollock had given to his painting Number 25 was actually Echo: Number 25 (1951). There is a contrast in techniques between his usual ‘drip’ style and the deviation in his use of black enamel painting that we can see in Number 25: he maintains his style with abstract paintings while also dabbling in figuration. As time passed, the exposed canvas slowly turned into a straw-yellow color and the areas exposed to light and heat were a different color. The dark enamel has a tar-like consistency and dries with an appealing glow. Both the incredible utilization of monochrome and the variety in force of the dark make dramatization and interest, encapsulating the endless innovativeness of 1950s New York.
