"Foxes"

Franz Marc (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 87 x 65 cm - 1913 - (Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf (Germany)) (i) - Expressionism (i)
Franz Marc revolutionised animal and nature paintings as one of the major exponents of German Expressionism and a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter. He enjoyed painting animals such as foxes. Marc painted the ferocious animal in bold brushstrokes and vibrant hues in this artwork simply named The Fox. The creatures are virtually concealed, and once viewed clearly, they are fractured, as if we are silently viewing the animals through shattered glass pieces. The Fox is a great example of a classic Marc piece and is one of the most well-known examples of Marc's cubist paintings. Taking genuine, natural shapes and breaking them down into abstract, prismatic forms in bright colours. Colors, according to Marc's creative theory, spoke an emotional language, almost as if each colour could hit a distinct emotional note. Similar to how a guitarist plays a succession of notes to create a tune that elicits emotion. Marc loved animals as a subject because they provided refuge from the agony and strain of modern life. Franz Marc would paint his beloved animal subjects until the end of his extremely short life, which he met on a WWII battlefield at the age of 36.
