"Portrait of the Lawyer Hugo Simons 1"

Otto Dix (i)
Hugo Simons was a good friend of Otto Dix and represented him in a case that served as a milestone for artistic freedom. One of Otto Dix’s had refused to pay him as it lacked likeness to the subject but the case ended well for Dix with the help of Simons. The portrait was made to show his gratitude. He portrays Simon sitting with an alert face, wearing a maroon suit performing a strange hand gesture that all describe the subject's oratorical intensity. It was painted in the artist's typical style using egg tempura covered with oil glaze, which produced an "aura" as Walter Benjamin describes it. The two became pen pals even after the outbreak of World War II. It was taken to Canada when the artist moved there and now hangs at the Montreal Fine Arts Museum.
