"Down on His Luck"

Frederick Mccubbin (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 1889 - (Art Gallery of Western Australia (Australia)) (i)
Frederick Mccubbin was a prominent part of Australian Impressionism and was notable for his works depicting the Australian bush, or the hinterlands. Down on his Luck depicts a disheartened swagman, sitting by a campfire on a log of wood by his belongings. A swagman was a travelling labourer who would carry his belongings with him as he travelled from farm to farm. The clothing the figure wears and his bedroll are typical of workers and swagmen in the bush, The dark subdued landscape was probably painted outdoors as Mccubbin had much love for it. It is most likely at Box Hill, outside of Melbourne that this was painted. The colours reflected the sombre mood of the figure. McCubbin kept a eucalyptus plant in the foreground, painted with much detail. It now sits at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
