Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 105 x 144 cm - 1880 - Realism (i)
Moonlight Night on the Dnieper was displayed in the first-ever exhibition of one single painting in the history Russian painting exhibition. It was a milestone in landscape painting and the artist himself considered it the main product of his entire life. The painting shows a night scene, the moon cascading its light over the river Dnieper, and although dim, the light is enough to shore the banks of the river, the flow of the water and the houses nearby. The painting is not only celebrated for its photographic accuracy but also for the tranquillity it instils. The viewer is given a perspective from the above, he does this to depict the full sky with the moon. The depth in the image is achieved by the contrasting warm cold shades of the earth and the sky. Arkhip Kuinji aspired to and succeeded to capture the expressive illuminative aspect of nature, he was known as an 'artist of light'.
