"Bees"

Henri Matisse (i) - 101 x 241 cm - 1948 - Fauvism (i)
The Bees was part of Matisse's cut-out designs created for the windows of The Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence, a small Catholic Church in the town of Vence on the French Riviera. Matisse planned the building and decoration of the church and houses many of Matisse's originals. He considers it his masterpiece. He involved himself in cut out designs in his old age to challenge the difficulties that come with it. The bees are aligned in an arc that suggests flight or movement, they are assembled by squares and look like nuns with their habits, or religious clothing. The colourful squares of yellow, red, blue and beige pink represent flowers and grass. When viewed as a single piece, you may notice the pattern of the colours form the shape of a fan. Matisse's ancestors were weavers and these cut-outs were a way for him to connect with his past.
