"Paris through the Window"

Marc Chagall (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 135 x 141 cm - 1913 - Cubism (i)
Marc Chagall had just moved from Russia to Paris before painting Paris through the Window, where Cubism was still in trend and you can see this influence in some details of Chagall’s painting. The image is of a large window looking out into Paris, the emblematic Eiffel Tower sits in the backdrop, and a two-faced figure, seen as Chagall himself, sits near a human-faced cat which the Jewish regarded as reincarnated sinners. The figure who is also linked to the Roman mythological god of beginnings (who also had two faces) has been read as Chagall looking towards Paris and Russia at the same time or a meditator between two worlds, past and present, real or imaginary. Another motif referring to his homeland is the upside-down railway track in the bottom left, representing his inability to return. Behind the figure are two people of Hasidic origins lying horizontally. There is also a parachutist, a reference to a contemporary event as the first successful jump was achieved a year prior. Overall, Chagall was considered a master of colour and didn’t generalise his work into any movement or category.
