"The blue fiddler"

Marc Chagall (i) - 1947 - Naive Art / Primitivism
Often compared to the likes of Kandinsky and Paul Klee, Marc Chagall made “The Blue Violinist” (also known as “The Blue Fiddler”) in 1947, sometime prior to his movement back to France from New York. A violinist can be seen in this painting, floating under a full moon, as he plays, sitting on a chair and overlooking the city. Shades of blue dominantly flood the frame, as a fauvist charm can be read off the face of our prime figure. The floatation featured in this painting is quietly reminiscent of Surrealism. Before there was a “blue violinist”, a “green violinist” was painted in 1924, which reveled in simpler times because it dated before the horrors of anti-Semitism. Naturally, “The Blue Fiddler” reeks of latent cynicism, bathed in darker hues. In spite of that, Chagall sears through as a romantic artist as music soars above a town engulfed in darkness.
