"The watchmaker of Switzerland"

Norman Rockwell (i) - Regionalism (i)
Norman Rockwell was at the height of his career when this painting was commissioned by the Swiss Federation of Watchmakers in 1948, it is now known as the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. They required an image for an advertising campaign that would be published in various forms to elevate their profile. Norman Rockwell got the job as he was one of America's most eminent artists at the time, famous for portraying American culture. Although this painting was a commission, Rockwell did not stray from his roots and his style, rather he expressed that this was his best. It had some significance to the artist as well as his great grandfather was also a watchmaker, and had his own store in New York, this provided a family history as the backdrop for his work. The painting shows a young boy at a counter and an old man inspecting a watch in a watch shop. This popular image has been recreated as a grandfather and grandson, or father and son as it appealed to a much wider population than only consumers. The image contains story, relations and emotion that was much better than the conventional advertisements which displayed only the product's functions.
