Octavio Ocampo (i) - Surrealism (i)
Octavio Ocampo is known for his evocative paintings, where he superimposes multiple images in one frame, in this way he communicates a variety of ideas and sentiments, making the whole just as beautiful as its parts. In his painting Buddha, Gautama’s face is composed of different figures that refer to various other religions. A group of followers bowing forms his chin, his lips made of Sahasara chakra, an important element in yogic traditions, Ganesha and Shri Kalki, from Hinduism, make up his ears, there is the tree of life and a dove on the centre of his forehead which implies the Holy Spirit from Chritianity. In the background are different buildings or places of worship. Ocampo may be implying that all religions are the same or have the same intention. These images seem to fade in and out of each other, the focus shifts from the parts to the whole, Ocampo calls the style, ‘metamorphic’.
