"Avond (Evening): The Red Tree"

Piet Mondrian (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 70 x 99 cm - 1910 - Post-Impressionism (i)

Avond (Evening): The Red Tree serves as an important piece in Mondrain’s list of work as it shows his gradual progress towards Abstraction and departure from realism. Trees can be found in many of his paintings, depicting the theme mostly between 1905 and 1913 but the colour in this one is striking and much brighter than his others. The darker colours appear behind the red, the bright red and dark blue creates spatial depth. Comparisons to Van Gogh’s work and his depiction of trees have been made with regards to the simplified colour palette and brushwork and also the use of personal feeling and emotions. The preliminary study drawings of this painting shows how intensely Mondrian was concerned with the colour, reducing the tree’s features to flat impressions. He transformed a tree into his own abstract ideation, creating equilibrium between the calming blue and the violent movement of the branches. HIs later works are evident of his abstraction, where the trees were hardly recognizable.
