"Clear ideas"

Rene Magritte (i) - 1958 - Surrealism (i)
This painting, previously known as Les idees claires, is as thought-provoking as it is ironic. The clear sky can be read as a symbol of a clear head, the sky being a common motif for ease of mind; similarly, the relatively calm sea can be read as a soothing stimulus but the large rock seems to be in the way. Moreover, the single cloud above it adds to the confusion. Magritte could have used it as a symbol of a barrier or blockage. Magritte had remarked that his paintings conceal no hidden meaning and they mean nothing, shifting the burden of interpretation to the viewer, leading to no consensus or a ‘clear idea’ on what the painting means.
