Roy Lichenstein was an important figure in Pop Art, his work was influenced by popular advertising and comic book strips, he created precise compositions that were taken from the popular comic books of that time; he was particularly fascinated by ones that featured women who were in love affairs with men who did not treat them well. The women he painted all look similar, their features look hard and crisp. The paintings In the Car was taken from a panel illustrated by Tony Abruzzo, from the comic book series Girl’s Romances that was released in 1961. Liechtenstein did not make any drastic changes to the composition, it has a man and a woman in a car, he only emphasized the lines that imply the speed of the car’s movement and saturated the colour to make it unrealistic; the man’s hair is blue and the woman's hair is bright blond, her leopard print coat is bright yellow, whereas the original is orange. The man looks sternly at the woman while she dons an annoyed face, her eyes not meeting his gaze. The speech bubble in the original image gives us a sense of the relationship between the two people, the woman is angry at herself for cancelling an appointment just to ride in a car with an apparently irresistible man.
