"Melting Watch"

Salvador Dali (i) - 1954 - Surrealism (i)
A well known Surrealist piece, Melting Watch bears the name ' Soft Watch at the Moment of First Explosion' but is known by other names as well. The image has a bright blue sky in the background, in sharp contrast with the golden colours in the foreground. The watch 'melts' along the side of a cubic structure but it is not just melting, it is falling apart. The presence of the fly on it may symbolise decay. A moth is also present beside it. The soft watch is a motif that Dali would return to many times. Dali believed that the passing of time would lead to eventual demise or destruction which may explain the original title of this painting – the mention of a ‘first’ explosion brings up the question of a second or more. The Melting Watch has become one of the most iconic Dali paintings, well recognized till today. Dali incorporates colour juxtaposition, placing deep browns and gold in background and the white of the clock in the foreground.
