"Door to the River"

Willem De Kooning (i) - 1960 - Abstract Expressionism (i)
Williem De Kooning was the most important Abstract Expressionist of the 20th Century, leading the abstract movement that included proficient artists like Rothko and Pollock. He was considered the ‘artist’s artist’, amongst his peers and was critically acclaimed. When he moved to New York from Amsterdam, he was briefly a house painter, and it will continue to show in his artworks, especially in Door to The River. This painting is marled with wide brush strokes, like a house painter’s brush, the door is formed by the pink, yellow, white and brown colours, and below it is the blue which may emulate the river mentioned in the tile. The painting does not bear resemblance to the continually reworking characteristic of his previous work, where he would combine abstract and figurative art, he would remark that he did not think while painting but rather see how far he could go. It also does not resemble the turbulent colours of his later works.
