"Moonlight"

Edvard Munch (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 93 x 110 cm - 1895 - (Nasjonalgalleriet (Oslo, Norway)) (i) - Symbolism (i)
Moonlight is one of Munch's more simplified renditions of the Norwegian coastal landscape. The image lacks any human presence, depicting no action but a mood, an environment, a sense of serenity. The Expressionist painter shows the moonlight as a vertical pillar, it is a common motif in Munch's work. The trees are straight and vertical as well, a strictness that is broken by the flow of the white coastline and the intense blue waters. The colours are subdued by the nighttime light. Although simplistic in style, the painting still evokes mystery and a sense that this tranquillity could be disturbed at any moment. The landscape painting is thought to be around Åsgårdstrand, where Munch stayed the summer of Moonlight’s creation. Nature was an inspiration to him, he wrote “twists the flowing shoreline, beyond lies the sea, which is always in motion, and beneath the canopy of trees varied life unfolds with its joys and cares.”
