"Sewing the Sail"

Joaquin Sorolla Y Bastida (i) - 1896
Joaquin Sorolla was a profilic Spanish painter, orphaned at a young age, his art education started when he was nine years old. His general fame came after 1982 and he became the head of the modern Spanish School of painting. His painting Cosiendo la vela, or Sewing the Sail, is one of his Valencian works, showing a scene of a group of people, sewing together a large white piece of cloth. The sail takes up most of the canvas, while seven figures hold it, working around it. They are surrounded by flowers and beyond them we see what looks like a sandy beach. The painting has meticulous detail, with much attention paid to the natural light that falls upon the scene. The influence of his former teacher, Gonzalo Salvá Simbor is apparent in his interest of painting in open air and in small format, while Ignacio Pinazo had instilled in him a love for Valencian traditional scenes. The art work is Impressionist in its style, although Sorolla had a distaste for it initially. The painting was not received well by the public, as the main protagonist was a large white cloth but the piece nevertheless shows Soralla’s mastery in the representation of light and colours.
