David Hockney was a young gay art student in the 1960’s who was strugling with his identity and as an artist, his earlier works were heavily codified. It was in college where he met more openly gay artists and was introduced to the works of Walt Whitman and Constantine Carafy. The painting We Two Boys Together Clinging was inspired by Walt Whitman who had a poem by the same name, referencing also a newspaper headline at the time, ‘Two Boys Cling to Cliff All Night’, hinting at Hockney’s crush on the singer Cliff Richard. Hockney had formal art training but this painting lacked any obvious technique, it is crude and emotional, as if made with urgency. The words on the canvas are reminiscent of graffiti, especially in public bathrooms, the work loudly stated his motive to paint as he pleases, to not withhold his expressions, it was an unapologetic declaration.
