Andy Warhol's screenprint Campbell's Soup I: Tomato 46 is from his 1968 Campbell's Soup I portfolio. The well-known series exemplifies Warhol's amazing ability to defy expectations and wow audiences. In 1962, after painting 32 Campbell's Soup Cans, Warhol went back to the soup theme to screen print the pictures. He was able to produce an even closer reproduction of the genuine Campbell's product using this approach. The design is basic and strong, using a limited colour palette to create a pleasing contrast. The tomato taste is perhaps the most well-known of all the soup flavours produced by Warhol. This portfolio, along with Campbell's Soup II (1969), is considered one of Warhol's most valuable. Though Campbell's Soup Cans resemble the mass-produced, printed advertising that inspired Warhol, the canvases are hand-painted, and the fleur de lys design that adorns the bottom border of each can is hand-stamped. By meticulously repeating the identical image across each canvas, Warhol replicated the repetition and uniformity of advertising. He merely changed the label on the front of each can, allowing them to be distinguished by their differences.
