Friedrich uses the compositional device, Ruckenfugen where the figure has its back towards the viewer. This creates a mysterious atmosphere. The artist, who lost three siblings and a mother before the age of 20, had a seriousness that reflected in his work. Here, he depicts a man in a green coat, on top of a mountain, looking out into the vastness of nature, the fog extends across the horizon allowing only a few mountains to surface. Some have interpreted this as self-reflection, or a metaphor for an unforeseeable future. Another interpretation suggests it represents the contradiction between mastery over a landscape while the individual becomes insignificant amidst it. Regardless, at the time European artists and writers were challenging the Enlightenment, choosing to look for passion, emotion and inspiration from nature. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, in this sense, serves as the quintessential Romantic artwork.
