Joan Miro describes The Farm as a summary of his entire life in the countryside. The painting is like an inventory of all the things he had in his farmhouse in Mont-Roig del Camp that his family had lived in since 1911. It details the usual life on a farm, showing the varieties of animals (a mule, some chickens, a dog, a goat, a rabbit, snails, insects and lizards,), crops, tools, buildings, soil and terraces. In the centre of the painting is a tall eucalyptus tree born from a dark circle and placed against a bright blue sky. The blue contrasts and compliments the earthy tones that dominate the rest of the image. This painting took 9 months to complete, Miro relates it to the nine months it takes to give birth to a human baby. It had taken him great effort to complete it and was of great importance to him, It is now displayed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
