This painting was made in the initial stage of Analytical Cubism, a practice using rudimentary overlapping shapes to create distinct forms; it is within this period that Picasso made some of his greatest works. Housed on the Hill depict the city of Horta de Ebro, the birthplace of his close friend Manuel Pallares. The houses on the hills have been rendered devoid of any windows, doors and other details, Picasso uses only the outlines, split into geometric shapes and arranged in a gridlock, fused, amalgamated until they are indistinguishable. He had started to adopt a muted palette and shading and although the image is composed of broken shapes, the foreground is still distinct from the background. Picasso had great skill to merge the features into one, and with the limited colours, he aimed to push the viewer to focus on the form as the bearer of the content.
