Anna Pavlova was a Russian Ballet Dancer who caused a sensation with her Dance Bacchanal from Pepita’s ballet The Seasons. She was the most celebrated dancer of her time, recognised for the poetic flow of her movement. John Lavery was requested to draw her for an advertisement and he agreed in exchange for sitting sessions. He painted two paintings during her three-month stay in London, he painted Anna Pavlova as Bacchante, she is in the midst of a movement, she is weightless as a feather, seeming to defy gravity. The painting Anna Pavlova however was painted on her return to London but had to leave for a tour, leaving the painting unfinished. John Lavery’s wife sat as the model, dressed in Pavlova’s costume. Here, the figure is sitting, he meant to depict the graceful death of a beautiful creature, her backdrop is the pool of a fountain, the dark colours provide a solemn and contemplative environment. Pavlova’s husband, Victor Dandre, did not consider it to be a good likeness to the dancer. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1912.
