Artist: Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso, born in Málaga, Spain in 1881, was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He is known for his wide variety of styles, including the Blue Period, Rose Period, African art-inspired Period, Cubism, and Classicism.
Title: La Vie
La Vie (The Life) is a masterpiece from Picasso's Blue Period, painted in Barcelona in May 1903. The painting is currently housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Size and Media
La Vie measures 196.5 by 129.2 centimeters (6.45 ft x 4.24 ft) and is painted in oil on canvas.
Style: Picasso's Blue Period
Picasso's Blue Period, which lasted from 1901 to 1904, was characterized by somber paintings in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. The subjects were mainly melancholic and impoverished figures. La Vie is considered the pinnacle of Picasso's Blue Period.
Date
La Vie was painted in May 1903.
[A href='https://WahooArt.com/Art.nsf/Art_EN?Open&Query=location+cleveland+museum+of+art,location,cleveland,museum&']Location: Cleveland Museum of Art[/A]
The painting is part of the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, located at 11150 East Boulevard, Cleveland, OH 44106, USA. The museum offers a wide range of artworks exhibited in the Museum of San Petronio, located in Bologna, Italy.
History
La Vie was painted at a time when Picasso was having no financial success. However, the new painting sold only a month after it was finished to a French art dealer, Jean Saint Gaudens. The sale was reported in the Barcelona newspaper, Liberal. In 1945, the painting was given by the Hanna fund to the Cleveland Museum of Art and is now part of their permanent collection.
Interpretation
The interpretation of La Vie's enigmatic composition has been the subject of much discussion. The male figure clearly shows the portrait of Picasso's friend, the painter Carlos Casagemas, who had committed suicide not long before Picasso painted La Vie. X-ray photographs show that Picasso first executed a self-portrait that he later replaced by the portrait of his friend.
