"Spring Bouquet"

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 1866 - (Fogg Art Museum (Cambridge, United States)) (i) - Impressionism (i)
The Spring Bouquet is one of the few Renoir paintings where flowers are the subject. This is one of his early works and we can already see his sensitivity to light and loose form. Here we see the influences of the Classical style of painting, which he studied when he was younger, and the skill of floral painting which he learned when he worked at a porcelain factory. The Japanese blue vase is reminiscent of the 'oriental' wave that swept across France at the time. Renoir painted with thin and free strokes using only a brush. The light, colour and execution of this painting give us a hint of his Impressionist style which he would later explore.
