"Lovers"

Émile Friant (i) - 1888
In the November of 1887, at Salon de Nancy, Emile Friant’s ‘Les Amoureux’ was presented. Shortly after, it was bought displayed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, France. ‘Les Amoureux’ translates to ‘The Lovers’ in English. As Louis-Théodore Devilly as his mentor, Friant was exposed to landscape painting and he practiced still life. Emile Friant was brought up amidst the chaos of the Franco-Prussian war, yet he took keen interest in representing the serenity of nature and love. The lovers in this paintings stand on the Pont-Cassé bridge which was situated in the Grand Moulins part of Nancy, France. Overlooking the Meurthe River, It was a beloved spot for Friant to take regular strolls in a state of peace. There is enough conspiracy about the meaning of this painting, given that their glances don’t meet. The realist movement, that Emile Friant was a part of, stood for the absence of such contexts and to merely experience reality in its simplicity.
