Roger de La Fresnaye was a French cubist painter born on July 11, 1885, in Le Mans, France. His family, the La Fresnayes, were an aristocratic family with a long history of military service. La Fresnaye's father was an officer in the French army, and his family's ancestral home, the Château de La Fresnaye, is located in Falaise.
Early Life and Education
La Fresnaye received a classical education and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1903 to 1904. He then attended the École des Beaux-Arts from 1904 to 1908, where he was influenced by Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier. La Fresnaye's early work, such as Woman with Chrysanthemums, demonstrates a dreamlike symbolist ambience and stylistic character of the Les Nabis group.
Cubism and the Section d'Or Group
From 1912 to 1914, La Fresnaye was a member of the Section d'Or group of artists, which was influenced by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. His work during this period, such as The Conquest of the Air, showcases his individual response to cubism. La Fresnaye's prismatic colors reflect the influence of Robert Delaunay.
World War I and Later Work
La Fresnaye enlisted in the French army during World War I but contracted tuberculosis and was discharged in 1918. His health deteriorated rapidly after the war, and he never regained the physical energy to undertake sustained work. In his later paintings, La Fresnaye abandoned cubist spatial analysis for a more linear style.
