"Ciphers and Constellations, in Love with a Woman"

Joan Miro - Gouache - 46 x 38 cm - 1941 - (Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, United States))

Applying Abstract Expressionist methods, Joan Miro painted “Ciphers and Constellations in Love with a Woman” in 1941, as a part of the 23-paintings series “Constellations”. Made using gouache, graphite, water colour and ivory-woven paper, this painting can be found at the Art Institute of Chicago, USA. Known for being an unofficial pioneer of the Surrealist style of painting, Miro also tried to navigate a linear style of ‘automatism’, which was about improvisation on canvas leading to an acute representation of the subconscious. Ruth Moon Kempher’s poem of the same title is based on this work. Miro worked on the Constellation series during the Spanish Civil War while he was exiled in France. The fascist Spain or France weren’t the right choices so he exhibited this series for the first time in New York, USA at the end of World War II. He once confessed in a letter to his friend that he always enjoyed looking out at night to see the stars. Since the war barred people from freely doing so, he painted stars on his window. That’s what gave rise to this series.
