"The Birth of the World"

Joan Miro - Oil On Canvas - 251 x 200 cm - 1925 - (Museum of Modern Art (New York, United States))

Joan Miro was in the midst of studying poetry when he produced Birth Of The World (1925) along with other works of the time depicting ‘dream pictures’ and ‘imaginary landscapes’ where his surrealism coincides with his poetic journey. In Birth Of The World, the shapes and lines seem unstructured, as if set down randomly but concealed within it is a poetic rhythm of its own- the red balloon, the lines, the eerie textured grey background floats together in juxtaposition. Describing the process, Miro explained that as he painted, the picture starts asserting itself under his brush, a trait of Surrealist technique using automatism to tap into their subconscious but Miro takes it further by adding a layer of control, he says “The first stage is free, unconscious… The second stage is carefully calculated.”
