"Branches with Almond Blossom (February 1890)"

Vincent Van Gogh - Oil - 74 x 92 cm - 1890

Van Gogh was fond of nature and enjoyed painting its features and amongst his favourites were blossoming trees. The Almond trees bloom in early spring, symbolizing birth and newness, it was painted after Vincent had learned that his nephew, Theo's son, would be named Vincent. He had taken inspiration from Japanese prints which often features close up details of nature and are often cropped. Van Gogh painted it as if we were sleeping underneath the branch, never seeing the tree. Moreover, cherry blossom is a very prominent Japanese motif. The painting has been a dear possession and was never sold even after the brothers' death. It is now held on display in The Van Gogh Museum.
