"Vincent's Bedroom in Arles (First version)"

Vincent Van Gogh - Oil On Canvas - 72 x 90 cm - 1888 - (Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands))

The Bedroom is a painting of a small bedroom in what was believed to be Van Gogh’s favourite housing in his entire life, the Yellow House. Three versions of the painting were created by Van Gogh, all very similar but carrying differences in the shades of colours that he used. The painting itself does not scream extravagant with the room being as tiny as it is and the minimal decorations that adorned it. However, that is exactly what Van Gogh had wanted when he had painted it. He wanted the spectator to feel a sense of rest and relaxation as they looked at his work.
In a letter to his brother, he writes “The whole thing is in color, making it easier which I attach to objects more style, so that they made me think about rest and sleep at all. The look needs to calm the brain, or rather, the imagination.” As an attempt to calm his mind and relax, Van Gogh perhaps painted a picture that would help him do that. However, as Van Gogh came to his tragic end, we can only see the painting as a reminder of what was once Van Gogh’s very own sanctuary.
