"Krishna (Spring in Kulu)"

Nicholas Roerich - Tempera - 74 x 118 cm - 1930

Krishna appears in this painting having a beige complexion, as opposed to the dark-blue skin we’re used to seeing in most depictions. Roerich paints the background euphorically in a variety of colours. He also mixed paint with egg-yolk for higher translucence, a combination which he used for snowy peaks to make them look magical. Symbolism has been used exhaustively in this work. One could draw that painting expressed an absorption of nature through religious and mystical practices. Roerich, throughout his career, showed his unwavering love for depicting religious myths and spiritual ideas. In 1923, he got drawn into the world of religious traditions outside his confines, so he travelled across the globe. A huge part of his interest also lay in the Indian Subcontinent, from where this painting also took birth.
