"The Battle of Alexander at Issus"

Albrecht Altdorfer - Oil, Oil On Panel - 158 x 120 cm - 1529 - (Alte Pinakothek (Munchen, Germany))

This painting was commissioned by Duke William IV of Bavaria as part of a set of historical pieces that was to hang in his Munich residence. This has since been regarded as Albrecht Altdorfer’s masterpiece, painted with immaculate detail. It shows the victory of Alexander the Great in 333 B.C. over the Persian army of King Darius III in the battle of Issus, which is in modern-day Turkey but the paintings set the scene in the Alps with German cities in the background. In the foreground, we see thousands of horse and foot soldiers from two armies, distinguished by the colour of their armours with many dead soldiers underneath them. The Persian king is with his army on a chariot with three horses and Alexander is pursuing him. Beyond the battlefield in the Mediterranean Sea and the island of Cyprus, here the browns fade into the blues. In the frame is also the Nile, the Red Sea, Nile Delta and the Sinai Peninsula. The sky above them is marked by a dichotomy, a setting sun and a crescent moon both adorn the sky, the heavy clouds swirl around them with ominous intensity. This is not a historical depiction but rather one that highlights Alexander’s greatness and heroism and it remained part of the royal collection of the Dukes of Bavaria for centuries.
