"Mercato A Constantinopoli"

Alberto Pasini was an Italian painter, best known for depicting Orientalist subjects in a late-Romantic style. Born on September 3, 1826, in Busseto, Italy, he lost his father at a young age and moved to Parma with his mother. At the age of 17, he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Art of Parma, studying landscape painting and drawing.

Early Career

Pasini's early career was influenced by his uncle, Antonio Pasini, a painter and manuscript illuminator who worked for the local nobility. In 1852, he exhibited a series of thirty designs, made into lithographs, depicting various castles around Piacenza, Lunigiana, and Parma. This caught the attention of artist Paolo Toschi, who encouraged Pasini to travel to Paris.

Paris and Orientalism

In Paris, Pasini joined the workshop of Charles and Eugène Ciceri, part of the School of Barbizon. His lithograph, The Evening, gained him admittance to the Paris Salon in 1853. He later became part of the workshop of Théodore Chassériau, a famous painter. The eruption of the Crimean War led to Pasini's trip to Persia, where he accompanied the French plenipotentiary minister Nicolas Prosper Bourée. This trip inspired numerous paintings of Orientalist subjects.
