"Pessimism and Optimism"

Giacomo Balla (i) - Oil On Canvas (i) - 1923 - Futurism (i)

Kept in Rome’s Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAM), “Pessimism and Optimism” is an example of “Futurist Art” made in the year 1923. A simplistic reading would place pessimism and optimism in the shades of black & blue respectively. However, both these shades are influencing each other in this work. Here’s where Giacomo Balla set himself apart from other futurists, as he didn’t simply dismiss evolution of technology as a form of impending doom. He meditated the nuances of modern existence amongst machines through a personal lens. In “Pessimism and Optimism”, Balla highlights the mutual exclusivity of these notions, as they constantly interact with each other in any situation. That’s why in portions dominated by black, tinges of blue can be seen blended. Similarly, with the usage of cool blue tones, Balla refrains from an overpowering portrayal of optimism and effectively distinguishes it from the notion of toxic positivity.
