"Blue II"

Joan Miro - Oil On Canvas - 270 x 355 cm - 1961

Joan Miro was fascinated by open spaces. While at the height of his career and under the influence of Cubism, he had the liberty to explore and portray whatever he wished. Blue II is part of a triptych and its companions are in the same shade of blue with small differences. The shade of blue is striking, the spots on the frame seem to create a movement that is limited by the red line. The artist had a deep attachment to the colour blue, it was the colour of vast skies, the colour of dreams and surrealism, the realm of blue is one where he could unconsciously flow without order, it is a spiritual colour, one that symbolizes inner and cosmic light. The shapes on the canvas are small, just as everything is tiny to the blue sky, he leaves the floor open to interpretation. His process does not include conscious creation but rather allows his hand to flow, using automatism.
