"Mother of the World"

Nicholas Roerich - Tempera - 1937

Nicholas Roerich was a Russian artist who spent the last part of his life in India. He was influenced by Eastern philosophy and Russian symbolism, and was interested in hypnosis and spiritual practices. In the East, the worship of a Mother figure such as Kali or Laxmi was widespread and likely to be predominant in Hinduism. In many ancient religions, the feminine is revered, the most ancient archetype to a mother who gives and protects. This may interpret the painting as the embodiment of The Great Mother-the image of her on mountains that serve as the throne, a flowing river carrying life with constellations on her side, and above her head, Venus- the morning star, foreshadowing the people’s joy.
