"Guernica"

Pablo Picasso - Oil On Canvas - 349 x 776 cm - 1937 - (Museo Reina Sofia (Madrid, Spain))

Pablo Picasso's work Guernica is a masterpiece. During the Spanish Civil War, it was founded in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country hamlet in northern Spain, by German and Italian airplanes at the demand of Spanish Nationalist troops on April 26, 1937. Picasso was commissioned by the Spanish Republican government to design a big mural for the Spanish exhibit at the Paris International Exposition at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris.
This art has taken on a monumental significance, serving as a constant reminder of war's atrocities. It became a peace sign and an anti-war emblem. Guernica was completed and presented throughout the world in a short tour, which served to draw international attention to the Spanish Civil War.
The Museo Reina Sofa in Madrid houses this work. From August 27 to September 19, the San Francisco Museum of Art (later SFMOMA) hosted the work's first public, free showing in the United States. On November 15, 1939, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City opened a significant Picasso exhibition, Picasso: 40 Years of His Art, which ran through January 7, 1940, and was organized by Alfred H. Barr (1902–1981) in partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago. Guernica and its studies were among the 344 paintings on display.
