"The Luncheon of the Boating Party"

Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Oil On Canvas - 173 x 130 cm - 1881 - (The Phillips Collection (Washington, United States))

"Luncheon of the Boating Party", or "Le déjeuner des canotiers" in French, is a stand-out work of French Impressionism by the revered artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Paul Durand-Ruel bought this painting in 1923 from Duncan Phillips, his son. The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.is currently in possession of this work.

Renoir captured a very specific moment from his life: Along the Seine River in Chatou, on the balcony of Maison Fouranise, a group of Renoir's friends can be seen relaxing. Gustave Caillebotte, a patron of art, can be seen seated towards the lower right of the painting. Aline Charigot, who was married to Renoir shortly after, can be seen playing with a small dog in the foreground. Art Historian Charles Ephrussi, Actress Ellen Andree, Angele Legault, and Jeanne Samarry, his personal secretary Jules Laforgue and journalist Adrien Maggiolo are some of the other renowned figures to have been identified in this painting.

The diagonal of the railing serves to demarcate the two halves of the composition, one densely packed with figures, the other being almost empty. In this painting Renoir has captured a great deal of light. The main focus of light is coming from the large opening in the balcony, beside the large man in the hat. The singlets of both men in the foreground and the table-cloth all work together to reflect this light and send it through the whole composition.
