"The false mirror"

Rene Magritte - Oil On Canvas - 54 x 80 cm - 1928 - (The Museum of Modern Art (New York, United States))

The False Mirror is an allegorical Surrealist painting, also referred to as 'magical realism. The painting is typical of Magritte's work as he tends to defy the viewer's normal insight. The painting is of an eye, without a face or a body, just an eye spread across the canvas, the viewer feels confronted with questions of what it is and what it could be looking at, the line is blurred and the viewer becomes the object being viewed as this large eye stares back. The pupil however is placed in the centre of the sky with floating clouds, bringing about more confusion. Magritte gives us some sort of answer when he says, “regardless of its realism a painting’s imagery should not be confused with objects of the real world.” His contemporaries like Man Ray, Salvador Dali, and Max Ernst, also incorporated the motif into their work, to challenge and create uneasiness in the viewer.
